I actually enjoy being on campus on days like this. Summer classes are kind of depressing, but when you have time to chill out and enjoy the campus, it’s kind of nice.
I took some time off from blogging. I had three writing intensive courses last semester. I wrote more than I wanted to write in my entire life. Now that it is over, I’m ready to start blogging again. With the world premier of our baby coming in the fall, I figured its the perfect time. I can’t wait to be the doting father that posts every second of his son’s life online. So here is a recap of the last several months of my life…
1. Jesalyn is pregnant… with my baby!
2. I finished my last core classes I need to graduate, but I have a few more hours to take before finishing.
3. I won a free trip to NYC and we took a 10 day trip to the city for my spring break.
With the exception of school, church, and magic, that’s about it. Now that you are caught up, be looking for more posts to be coming in the future.
This weekend I started going through a lesson plan with the 5th graders at Radiant Life. Billy Graham Ministries based a study around Daniel and geared it towards students. Its to better equip them to share the Gospel and stand firm in their beliefs just as Daniel did in the Bible. I don’t think students are the only people who can learn from this study.
I learn most effectively through teaching. As I prepare myself to teach I always learn more and grow deeper. So as I walk through this with the 5th graders I am going to walk through it on here for myself.
When Daniel is introduced in the Bible he is a pre-teen. He has been chosen by the Babylonians as one of the best and brightest youth. They take him and the other chosen youth and begin brainwashing them and forming them into the perfect Babylonian.
Daniel 1:3-5 Then the king ordered Ashpenaz, chief of his court officials, to bring into the king’s service some of the Israelites from the royal family and the nobility— 4 young men without any physical defect, handsome, showing aptitude for every kind of learning, well informed, quick to understand, and qualified to serve in the king’s palace. He was to teach them the language and literature of the Babylonians. 5 The king assigned them a daily amount of food and wine from the king’s table. They were to be trained for three years, and after that they were to enter the king’s service.
The King even changed their names, which in those times was a common practice when someone was “born again”.
Daniel 1:8 But Daniel resolved not to defile himself with the royal food and wine, and he asked the chief official for permission not to defile himself this way.
Daniel chose to stand strong in his beliefs. The Babylonians worshiped their king and many gods, but Daniel had been raised to believe in the God of the Bible, the Hebrew God, Yahweh. He also was raised to respect himself and his body.
Daniel was able to stand firm in his beliefs even when the king and the Babylonian world were trying to tell him otherwise. He was able to do this because of his strong foundation in God and the scriptures. This is why we study the Bible and why we memorize scripture. So that we can stand up against the false teachings of the world and defend ourselves with the Word of God.
John 3:16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
This is the first verse in equipping anyone to share the Gospel. It is our first memory verse in D2BD. This is our first step in being able to stand up against the false teachings of the world and spread the love of God. This is where it begins…
This month at UMA was impromptu magic. I took it as a challenge to use genuine borrowed objects and perform a miracle or two. There were some other great performances from fellow magicians.
There’s something magical about Christmas, especially when you have a Christmas party with a bunch of magicians. My beautiful wife accompanied me to the United Magicians Association’s Christmas party tonight. After a feast made by Boston Market and a little fellowship we got to top off the night with Holiday Magic. We got to see Glen Yost float Rudolf’s nose around the room. Craig Stone did an amazing routine with his daughter using nothing, but a pink hanky. I finally got to witness the infamous thimble at work on the fingertips of Buddy Farnan. Mike G, Leon the Illusionist, and Haydini all graced the stage.
What a great night! It was the best night of magic (overall) that I have seen at a UMA meeting. There may be video to follow shortly, but for now just check out the pictures. Check out a couple more on my facebook page.
After missing church this morning, due to alarm clock malfunction (Jesalyn’s fault), I was excited about getting out in the community. This is the third year for Radiant Life doing the Singing Santa. It was our first time getting to experience it. This was the first week so if you missed it, we will be doing it for the next two weekends in neighborhoods around Huntersville. Check out times and locations here.
We had a great time. It was the coldest night of the year, but that didn’t keep the neighbors from coming to see Santa and enjoying cookies and hot chocolate. Santa drove around the neighborhood several times in a lit up sleigh and invited everyone over to join us for cookies and hot chocolate and a chance to meet the one and only Santa. Check out the other videos of Santa and his sleigh on my youtube channel. Everyone seemed to have a great time. It was blistering cold, but the hot chocolate and entertainment seemed to keep everyone smiling.
What a great way to show Jesus’ love for our neighbors. Sharing time, food, and talents with neighbors may not be easy, especially when its freezing cold, but its what we are called to do. I can’t wait until next week! Let me know if you want to join us next week in Latta Springs.
Tonight, Saturday from 7-8pm at the corner of Trade and Tryon. Check it out!
Uptown Charlotte, here we come! Jes and I went to check out our future apartments over the weekend and we came across a great deal. We are waiting on final word from Post Properties, but we should know tomorrow (Monday) if we got it. If all works out we are set to move in 3 weeks.
Our new home will be uptown in the Gateway area. You can check it out here. We will be moving in on the weekend of Dec. 6th. The cool part is the first Monday we move in will be my favorite Panthers game of the year. Panthers vs. Bucs Monday Night Football! I know it sounds like it, but I didn’t plan it that way. I’m going to tailgate at our new place all day and walk to the game. If anyone wants to join at any time that day let me know or just come on over.
