Panthers Mistakes

Most of you know. I love Jake Delhomme. I’m not afraid to admit it. I am secure enough in my manhood. You might know my dog is named after the man that was Mr. Panther. I would live and die with every pass. I had been dieing a lot lately. I guess you could say Jake’s stats last season were by far his worst. 18 interception and he only played 11 games.

The Panthers are making moves this off-season. They have cut or released over %50 of their salary from last year. They are going with a “youth movement”. Other than John Kasey there are only 2 people on the roster over 30.

I see the thought, but here’s what doesn’t make sense. They weren’t that far from a Superbowl and this year there is no salary cap in the NFL. Lets face it… the Panthers were a receiver, kick returner, and QB away from winning a Superbowl. Signing Brandon Marshall, or Antonio Bryant and keeping Matt Moore and signing a good competition for his spot (Brady Quinn) would be an easy way to take us to the next level. Renegotiating Delhomme’s deal would allow us to keep him as a backup, but if its not possible then keep it moving.

Peppers or No Peppers we could have been great on D. Releasing Lewis, Kemo, and Brayton just doesn’t make sense. They were a relatively cheap D-line with success. With our Linebacking core and Everett Brown the D could be just as good or one person away from being great. This is where the Panthers are making a mistake. All it would take would be the addition of a few players and we could easily do that with the money saved from not have Peppers or Delhomme’s salary to pay.

Most teams prepare to rebuild a year or two before they actually do it. The Bucs are a good example of a team that didn’t prepare ahead of time and look at what happened to them. The Patriots are a good example of a team who prepared to rebuild a few years before they needed to. I am afraid the Panthers are leaning towards the Bucs side of things.

Now there’s talk about raising ticket prices!!! What!?! You get rid of half the salary and use the money you save to cut ticket prices, not raise them! I hate to jump to this, but JR has been a great owner and I don’t know if its his physical health, financial health, or fear of a lock-out, but there is something going on behind the scenes and it is not looking good for Panthers fans. I will keep cheering and hoping for the best, but I might just have to do it from the couch instead of a Bank of America Stadium seat.
